CRITIQUES OF GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Danish's Response:
Great Expectations is a wonderful story of a young boy, and later evolving into man, who learns important life lessons through the cost of what it meant to the lives of others. This novel by Charles Dickens shows the true nature of human kind and how the views on life change as the person matures and grows older. On the contrary, Great Expectations is quite a long read, yet there was such a grand story to be told within the context of the book. From the immense number of books I have read, I must to admit that Great Expectations was one of the best books because of the lessons it contains and the true nature that it shows toward human motives. This book is a must read.

Michelle's Response:
Great Expectations was one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. Dickens has a very unique writing style, and his diction truly helped to create the perfect mood. When Pip was distraught, happy, or even mad a distinct mood was created. The morals in this novel were ones of great importance. The story clearly shows the fact that affection is a necessity in ones life. Pip finds that he is very affectionate towards Estella, and Dickens fabulously portrayed their feelings toward one another using his word choice and setting. Making the right choice is another important lesson taught. Pip has to make many difficult decisions throughout the novel, such as that of moving to London, and some were not always right. This shows that we need to have a sense of right and wrong when deciding what to do in our lives. Throughout the novel, there were many symbols used. For instance, the Satis House represents Pip’s longing to be wealthy. It also shows his point of view of the upper class society. With Charles Dickens' impeccable writing, and his use of symbolism throughout, this novel clearly got its point across, and one can see that this novel is one of immense greatness.

Ginger's Response:
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens is a great book to read if you are a person who likes to read moralistic, political narratives. However, I prefer to read fantasy and non-fiction books, so I had a hard time getting into Great Expectations. Charles Dickens has a fascinating way of writing. He always tends to make his writing based around political or moral ideals. In Great Expectations, for example, he writes about the poor and their way of life. However, I did like the basic plot idea. I liked the characters that Charles Dickens has made. The way that everything fit together at the end of the book was fantastic.

Daniel's Response:
The Charles Dickens' classic novel, Great Expectations, was personally a hard read for me; although, the constant assessments based on the text forced me to stick to the long, hard journey of reading this novel. Strangely, after completely reading the piece, I began to absorb the enormity of this book. I slowly proceeded to appreciate the hard work that Dickens has put into this well-thought plot and its various characters, even though it might have been too wordy, the novel opened new doors of lessons to be taught. Out of all, the theme of this piece was spectacularly a great one to discover, and it addresses a good moral to be all who experiences this awesome read. Great Expectations might have been a rough start, but it sure ended with a greater influence for me to learn from.
